Our mission is to provide financial assistance for the medical care of retired working K-9s.

They Protected Us. Now It’s Our Turn.

Every day across the country, K-9 officers put their lives on the line alongside their human partners. They detect explosives, track down criminals, search for missing persons, and protect the communities they serve. These dogs don’t just do a job — they form unbreakable bonds with their handlers and earn their place as trusted partners and family members.

But when the sirens fade and it’s time to retire, most working dogs face a stark reality: there is no pension, no medical coverage, and very few department resources to support their care. Instead, the full financial responsibility for their ongoing veterinary needs — from routine exams to emergency surgeries — falls entirely on the shoulders of their former handler and their family.

This is where MARK-9 (Medical Assistance for Retired K-9s) steps in.

Founded in 2014 by a veterinarian and a law enforcement K-9 handler with a deep commitment to the welfare of these dogs, MARK-9 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance for the medical care of retired working K-9s

Retired K-9s often leave service due to age or medical issues — issues that don’t go away once their working days are over. In fact, the wear and tear of a demanding career can lead to costly health problems in retirement. Whether it’s routine wellness care, an unexpected illness, or a life-threatening emergency, the cost of veterinary treatment can be overwhelming.

These dogs gave everything they had in service. They worked selflessly, loyally, and often in dangerous conditions. They deserve a happy, healthy retirement — and we believe their service should be honored with care, dignity, and support.

At MARK-9, we invite you to join us in giving back to those who gave their all. Your support ensures these retired heroes receive the medical attention they need and the comfort they deserve in their final years.

Because after all they’ve done for us, they shouldn’t have to fight their last battles alone.

You can join us in supporting retired working K-9’s by signing up for our newsletter, following us on Facebook and/or making a donation.
